As part of my work with children/teenagers, I often find it beneficial to provide parent-coaching sessions to supplement work that is done in session with a family or child/teenager. Given the centrality of parents to their children’s development, I strive to work collaboratively with parents and utilize their expertise in developing treatment plans that fit their child and their family.
In this collaborative work with parents I seek to provide an environment of non-judgmental acceptance. Parents whose children are in need of therapy often experience a great deal of shame and self-blame; such experiences can inhibit the ability of parents to be curious about their own and their children’s responses. By utilizing mindfulness techniques (moment-to-moment, non-judgmental awareness) within the relationship between myself and the parent, the parent is often able to integrate a gentler response with themselves, thereby creating more possibilities in relating with their child.
When a parent can experience a gentle curiosity about themselves, they can better understand the ways in which their child’s behaviors trigger certain parental responses, often shaped by the parents’ own history with their parents, siblings, etc. I will assist you in learning how to maintain a mindful, attuned presence with you child/ren while also remaining compassionate with your own needs as a parent.
Most parents find this aspect of treatment enormously beneficial and notice improvements in their relationships with their child and their child’s behavior merely as a result of their own parenting-focused work.
Drawing upon knowledge and strategies from the fields of attachment theory and mindfulness, we will work towards enhancing your relationship with your child/ren, we well as, with yourself.
